Getting started
What is Phantom?
It’s a desktop app for playing Animal Jam Classic. It signs in to the game for you and runs the Flash client itself. All the traffic between the game and Animal Jam goes through a proxy on your own computer. That’s how the rest works: several accounts at once, a packet console, a TypeScript scripting API and plugins.
Which systems does Phantom run on?
Windows 10 or later, 64 bit Linux with a desktop, or a Mac on Apple silicon or Intel. The Mac download carries Flash with it, as the Windows and Linux ones do, so nothing else needs installing. On an Apple silicon Mac it plays through Rosetta, which macOS offers to set up the first time you open Phantom.
Windows says it blocked Phantom. Is something wrong?
No. Phantom is not code signed yet, so Windows cannot tell who published it and says so. Which message you get depends on the machine. SmartScreen shows “Windows protected your PC”, and choosing More info then Run anyway installs it. Smart App Control, which is on some clean installs of Windows 11, blocks it outright with no way past: the only way to install Phantom on a machine with it switched on is to switch it off, in Windows Security under App & browser control. Be aware that Windows will not let you switch it back on afterwards without reinstalling Windows, so it is your call whether Phantom is worth that. Signing is something we intend to sort out.
The app downloaded an update, then nothing happened. Why?
The same thing. Windows will not start an installer it cannot verify, and on a machine with Smart App Control switched on that includes Phantom’s own updates, so the app closes and comes back on the version it was already on. Until Phantom is signed, download the newest version from this website and run it over the top of the old one; nothing is lost by installing that way.
What do I need before I start?
A Phantom account, which you make on this website. That’s all the private server needs. To play your own Animal Jam accounts you also need a plan and the accounts themselves. We don’t sell Animal Jam accounts, memberships, gems or items, and Phantom can’t give you any of them.
How do I add an Animal Jam account?
Open Phantom, click Add account, and sign in with your Animal Jam username and password. Phantom saves it in your computer’s keychain and uses it to sign in when you play. The account then shows up on your dashboard here as a linked player.
Playing
How many accounts can I play at once?
Up to 8 at once, side by side in one window, and you can save up to 50 accounts to play from. Both plans are the same here. Each game is its own Flash player and connection, and past that a computer struggles more than it helps. Switching between them doesn’t reload anything.
What is the packet console for?
It shows the messages a game sends and receives, split into named fields instead of raw text. You can send your own too. It’s how you find out what the game actually asks the server for, which is usually the first step in writing a script.
Scripts
What can a script do?
A script is some TypeScript you run on one game or on all the games you have open. Through the phantom API it can reach your avatar, chat, buddies, trades, inventory, shops, dens, pets, minigames, adventures and the rest of the game. It can also hook any packet going either way. Hooks and watchers keep running after the code finishes, until you stop the script.
Where do my scripts live?
On your computer, with the rest of Phantom’s settings. They aren’t synced or uploaded, and Phantom’s servers can’t read them.
Plugins
What can a plugin do to my account?
Only what it asks for in its manifest and you allow. It can add its own page, a panel next to a game, or a command. It can also ask to see the game, act as you, change your account, watch, send or change named packets, control the Flash client, swap the game’s pictures and sounds while it’s open, reach named websites, copy to your clipboard, or show notifications. Phantom shows you each of these before any of its code runs. Some are optional and you can say no to them. You also pick which of your games it runs on.
Are plugins checked before they are listed?
Yes. All published versions go through automatic checks. If a version asks for more than the harmless stuff (the clipboard and notifications), someone at Phantom also has to read it before it’s listed. A reviewed version says so on its page and its card.
How do I report a plugin?
Click Report this plugin on its page here, or Report on its page in the app. You don’t need it installed. Pick a reason, add anything that might help, and send it while you’re signed in to your Phantom account. Our staff read all reports and can take a plugin off the store. The author is never told who reported it.
Plans and billing
Jam was free. Why does Phantom cost money?
Jam’s still there and still free. Phantom is a different app, and a bigger one: all your accounts in one window, a packet console that can hold traffic, a typed scripting API, reviewed plugins, and your accounts and plugins on any computer you sign in on. The servers, the reviews and keeping up with game updates cost money, and that’s what the price pays for.
What does Phantom cost?
$6.99 for 30 days, or $39.99 once for Lifetime, which you pay for one time and never expires. Both get you the whole app. The only difference is how long they last. There’s no trial, but the private server is free with a Phantom account.
How do I change or cancel my plan?
Go to Billing on your dashboard and open Stripe. That’s where you change your card, see invoices or cancel. If you cancel, the next renewal won’t happen and you keep Phantom until the period you’ve paid for ends. That period isn’t refunded. To move from Monthly to Lifetime, cancel first and buy Lifetime once that period has run out. Lifetime isn’t a subscription, so there’s nothing to change or cancel on it.
What happens when my plan runs out?
Phantom stops playing games. The app still opens, and your saved accounts, scripts and plugins stay on your computer. It all works again as soon as you subscribe, and a monthly plan is enough to come back for a month. Lifetime never ends, so this won’t happen on that plan.
Where do I find my invoices?
In Stripe. Click Open Stripe on the Billing page of your dashboard. You can view and download them all there.
Privacy and safety
Where does my Animal Jam password go?
It goes into the desktop app, then straight to Animal Jam’s own sign in, the same way the game sends it. It’s kept in your computer’s keychain and never goes to Phantom’s servers. All Phantom’s API learns is which Animal Jam player you signed in as, so your plan can be tied to the account that’s playing.
Can I get banned for using Phantom?
You might. Animal Jam makes the rules, and they decide what happens to an account. Phantom runs the real game through a proxy on your own computer, so it isn’t hidden from them. It doesn’t break into anything and can’t give you items the game wouldn’t. What you do with the scripting API is up to you, and so is the risk.
Is Phantom made by Animal Jam?
No. Phantom isn’t affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to Animal Jam or WildWorks. It’s an independent app that plays their game.
Phantom community
How do I meet other Phantom users?
Through plugins. A plugin can make a room that everyone with the plugin can walk into together, or send messages between copies of itself on different people’s computers. Phantom doesn’t have its own chat. The plugin decides what you do together, and Phantom’s rules and moderators still apply.
What are the community’s rules?
Be kind. Keep yourself safe. Never share your password, your real name, where you live, your school or any way to reach you outside Animal Jam. Nobody from Phantom will ever ask for them. No scams, and no promising items, gems or memberships. Don’t try to get people to meet you anywhere else, and don’t flood a room. Slurs are never shown and swearing is masked. If you break the rules you can lose the community for good, but your plan and the rest of the app aren’t affected.
How do I stop seeing someone?
Hide them, from any plugin that lets you. After that, neither of you sees or hears the other in any shared room or plugin channel, on any computer you sign in on. They aren’t told. A plugin can also let you report someone. That sends Phantom’s moderators the last thing they said in a shared room you were in.
Is what I say kept?
No. What you say in a shared room goes to the people in it and isn’t written down. The server keeps the last half hour in memory so it can be reported, then forgets it. There are two exceptions. Anything someone reports is kept for Phantom’s moderators to read. And the list of people you’ve hidden is kept as ids.
When something goes wrong
A game will not start
First check the account signs in on animaljam.com. A password change, a suspension or an email you need to confirm will stop Phantom the same way it stops the website. If it works there, try the account again in Phantom. The account row will tell you what went wrong.
A plugin stopped working after a game update
Plugins that use the Flash client are built for particular versions of the game client, and the manifest can list which. When Animal Jam puts out a new one, Phantom warns you, and the author has to publish an update for it. Plugins that only use packets or the scripting API are usually fine.
My plan does not show up in the app
Stripe tells Phantom about your payment, and that can take a few seconds after you’re back from checkout. Sign out of the desktop app and back in, or reopen your dashboard here. If it’s still missing after a few minutes, email support@phantm.site from the address on your account.
